the holidays / vacances are called "freedom" in Hebrew.
July August are also called "the big freedom". you're free to go wherever you want, spend your money however you choose.
this week I saw thousands of free people. cramped together in small beaches on the French Riviera. carefully selected spots with lots of sun, lots of restaurants, lots of shops, lots of free people. Hawaii shirts rule the street, a mixture of old pensioners with little dogs in their arms like babies, families with their over-tanned over-fed over-dressed hormone-eaten teenagers and locals selling everything.
two days later we left the promised land and reached the Atlantic ocean. huge long stretches of wild shore, with maybe two or three surfers who were unfortunate enough to be free this time of year.
